Explain Everything: The Infinite Multimedia Whiteboard You Didn't Know You Needed
Limited Capacity seats available

As we move away from the interactive whiteboards in the elementary schools, Explain Everything (EE) is a tool that teachers will want to have at their disposal. It has some non-intuitive parts to it, so presenting on it to teachers (rather than having them figure it out on their own) will be helpful. The session will explore how EE can be used as a mobile, multimedia whiteboard that can be pre-loaded with information or interacted directly with during a lesson. If time permits, we can look at how students could use the app to demonstrate their learning.

BPS Art Department Collaboration
BPS Art Department staff collaboration time. Please attend other mandatory or required sessions as needed throughout the day. Please note that this session will be held at Burlington High School.
  • Studio Time / Skill Building -- Have teacher(s) teach their strengths to the rest of the group: clay techniques and observational drawing). Forum for discussion of HOW we each teach a certain topic or method. What language do we use? How do we engage higher-order thinking with this topic? What strategies do we think are helpful? We would focus on both clay techniques (using the wheels in the ceramics studio) and observational drawing.
  • DDM review/revision -- Most of us administered at least one DDM last year. We will have time to discuss the outcomes, and determine whether these are good tools to assess student growth and teacher impact. If not, we'll revise them or work on new DDMs.
  • Development of teaching websites: For some teachers, this might be basic setup, starting with Weebly, Wix, or Wordpress (We'd stick to just one for now.). For teachers with sites already, they could have time to build a more extensive site that includes more content: course descriptions, course expectations, curriculum maps with well-designed units, lessons with mastery-based objectives, steps in processes, context for learning, (full lesson plans), assignments, references and resources, etc. Basically, building a full curriculum into an easily accessible online resource. Art teachers who have extensive working websites will help those with little or no experience.

Addressing Hate in a Neighboring Community - (MSMS and BHS Faculty)
Thanks to BHS staff members Christina Chang and Judy Crossman for submitting this session!

Beginning in 2013, the community of Bedford started dealing with a string of Anti-Semitic events.  You can see the timeline from a recent Boston Globe article here.   Despite these unfortunate events, the community of Bedford responded in a way that actually drew the community closer together thanks to some strong community leadership. This story was outlined in a recent Boston Globe Magazine article titled How a string of swastikas actually made Bedford stronger. This session will feature some of the community leaders who played a strong role in Bedford's positive response to these negative incidents, including Rabbi Susan Abramson, Superintendent of Schools Jon Sills, Police Chief Robert Bongiorno, and Burlington High School Student Ashley Koman.
